Minecraft The Sift: Everything We Know About the New Dimension
Minecraft players have been waiting a very long time for a new dimension. That wait is finally coming to an end with The Sift, a strange and colorful new world that is first appearing in Minecraft Dungeons II before making its way to the main Minecraft game in 2027.
The Sift is not simply another biome or a reskinned version of an existing area. Mojang describes it as an entirely new dimension, making it the first new dimension added to Minecraft in more than 14 years. It will eventually join the Overworld, Nether and End as the game’s fourth dimension.
What Is The Sift in Minecraft?
The Sift is a new dimension connected to the world of Minecraft Dungeons II. In the sequel, players explore an interconnected world rather than moving through the same level-based structure used by the original game.
One of the main ways into the Sift is through mysterious rifts that appear throughout the Dungeons II world. Walking into one of these rifts takes the player into the new dimension.
The official material gives the Sift a very different visual identity. Instead of the familiar colors of the Overworld or the harsh environment of the Nether, the dimension is filled with glowing blues, turquoise tones, pink landscapes and strange vegetation.

Why Is The Sift Such a Big Deal?
For a game that has had the same three main dimensions for years, the arrival of a fourth one is a major change.
The Overworld, Nether and End each have their own atmosphere and gameplay identity. The Sift appears to be heading in the same direction, with its own landscapes, environments and creatures.
Mojang specifically described the Sift as “beautiful, vibrant, and teeming with souls” in its Minecraft Live recap. The official reveal also mentioned locations including the Meadow and the Carapace.
That leaves plenty of room for speculation, but there is a difference between what has been shown and what players are hoping for. Mojang has revealed the dimension and some of its locations, but many gameplay details for the eventual Java and Bedrock version have not yet been fully explained.
The Sift in Minecraft Dungeons II
Players will get their first playable experience of the Sift in Minecraft Dungeons II.
Minecraft Dungeons II is scheduled to launch on September 29, 2026. The game expands the original Dungeons formula with an interconnected world, new encounters and the Sift itself.
The official Minecraft gameplay trailer already showed the Sift as one of the main new environments in the sequel. According to Mojang, mysterious rifts lead players into the dimension, where they can encounter unfamiliar environments and threats.

What Areas Are in The Sift?
Two areas have already been named by Mojang:
The Meadow
The Meadow is one of the locations highlighted during the Minecraft Live presentation and the official recap. It is part of the broader Sift experience in Minecraft Dungeons II.
The Carapace
The Carapace is another named area within the Sift. Mojang has confirmed its presence, although detailed information about how it works and what players will find there is still limited.
These locations suggest that the Sift will not be a single uniform landscape. Instead, it appears to have distinct environments that give the dimension some variety.
Will The Sift Come to Normal Minecraft?
Yes.
This is probably the most important part of the announcement.
Mojang confirmed during Minecraft Live that The Sift is coming to Minecraft Java Edition and Bedrock Edition in 2027. When it arrives, it will become Minecraft’s fourth dimension.
However, players should not confuse the 2026 Dungeons II release with the 2027 main-game release. The Sift will be playable in Minecraft Dungeons II first, while the version coming to the traditional Minecraft experience is scheduled for the following year.
What Will The Sift Be Like in Java and Bedrock?
This is where things get interesting.
Mojang has confirmed the 2027 arrival, but not every gameplay detail has been announced yet. The reveal gave players a preview of the world and at least one of the creatures that lives there, but the full list of blocks, mobs, structures, resources, progression systems and portal mechanics has not been completely detailed in the official announcement.
So for now, it is better to separate confirmed information from fan speculation.
There is a lot players will want to know:
- How will players enter the Sift?
- Will there be a new portal structure?
- What materials can be collected there?
- Which mobs will spawn?
- Will there be new ores or tools?
- Will the Sift have a unique boss?
- What will happen to the Sift in multiplayer worlds?
- Will its terrain generation work differently from the Overworld?
Those answers should become clearer as Mojang releases more information.
The Sift Could Change Exploration in Minecraft
One of Minecraft’s biggest strengths has always been exploration. The addition of another dimension gives Mojang a completely new space to experiment with that idea.
The Nether changed the way players travelled and gathered resources. The End introduced a very different environment and became closely associated with the game’s biggest progression milestone.
The Sift has the opportunity to establish its own identity rather than simply acting as another place to collect materials.
Its unusual visual design already makes it stand out. The official screenshots show a world filled with glowing landscapes, cliffs, unusual vegetation and a much more colorful atmosphere than the Nether or End.
When Can You Play The Sift?
There are currently two important dates to remember.
September 29, 2026:
The Sift arrives as part of Minecraft Dungeons II.
2027:
The Sift is planned to arrive in Minecraft Java & Bedrock Edition as the game’s fourth dimension.
The exact 2027 release date for the standard Minecraft version has not been announced in the official recap.
Final Thoughts
The Sift is one of the biggest changes coming to Minecraft in years. What makes the announcement particularly interesting is that Mojang is not treating it as just another biome. It is being introduced as a completely new dimension, with its own environments and creatures.
Players will get their first hands-on look through Minecraft Dungeons II on September 29, 2026. The bigger moment for traditional Minecraft players will come in 2027, when The Sift is planned to make its way to Java and Bedrock.
For now, a lot of questions remain unanswered. And honestly, that may be part of the fun. Mojang has shown enough of The Sift to get players curious without revealing everything at once.
