Story

**Mononoke The Movie: Chapter III – The Curse of the Serpent** is a Japanese animated supernatural horror and mystery film directed by Tomoaki Koshida, with Kenji Nakamura serving as chief director. It is the third and final movie in the *Mononoke* film trilogy and continues the story of the mysterious Medicine Seller inside the Ōoku, the secluded inner chambers of the Japanese imperial court. The film brings the trilogy’s story to its final chapter, following **Mononoke The Movie: The Phantom in the Rain** (2024) and **Mononoke The Movie: Chapter II – The Ashes of Rage** (2025). The story once again combines supernatural horror with psychological mystery, focusing on the connection between human emotions, resentment and the birth of mononoke. This time, the central mystery involves a terrifying serpent spirit and secrets buried deep within the history of the Ōoku. After the previous battles involving the Medicine Seller, the Inner Chambers appear to have finally returned to a fragile sense of peace. But the calm does not last. Yukiko, the Emperor’s lawful wife, finally gives birth to a long-awaited male heir. The moment that should have brought happiness to the palace instead ends in tragedy when the child dies despite everyone’s prayers. For Yukiko, the loss is devastating. She had hoped that giving birth to an heir would transform her empty marriage and give her life a new purpose. Her grief gradually becomes entangled with a dangerous conspiracy developing inside the Inner Chambers. At the same time, strange events begin occurring throughout the Ōoku. Unnatural tremors shake the palace, strange triangular scales begin appearing, and a series of gruesome deaths leaves the residents terrified. The Medicine Seller soon encounters a new mononoke in the form of a gigantic serpent, a terrifying snake god connected to the deepest secrets of the Inner Chambers. Although he manages to temporarily repel the creature, the Medicine Seller cannot draw the Sacred Sword. As always, he must uncover the mononoke’s **Shape, Truth and Reason** before the sword can be used against it. The investigation eventually leads back more than 150 years into the past, to the origins of the Ōoku itself and the hidden history surrounding Ama-no-Tsubone, the Third Emperor’s wet nurse. As the Medicine Seller uncovers the connection between the palace’s history, the Mizorogi family and the repeated appearance of mononoke within the Ōoku, the true source of the serpent’s rage begins to emerge. The final confrontation forces the Medicine Seller to face an enemy empowered by generations of accumulated hatred.

Review

*Mononoke The Movie: Chapter III – The Curse of the Serpent* brings the movie trilogy’s Ōoku storyline to its conclusion by combining supernatural horror with a mystery rooted in the history of the palace. The film’s central conflict is not simply about defeating a monster. The Medicine Seller has to investigate the emotions and historical events that created the mononoke in the first place. The combination of psychological mystery, Japanese historical atmosphere, supernatural horror and the series’ distinctive animation style makes the final chapter closely connected to the identity established by the earlier films. ## Images Recommended images for this section: * Official movie poster * Main key art * Medicine Seller character artwork * Yukiko character artwork * Snake God artwork * Ōoku promotional artwork * Official Netflix stills * Main cast promotional images
